Everything You Need To Know About the New Trending App, BeReal

What is BeReal?

BeReal, also known as the “Anti-Instagram” app, is a social networking app that sends its users random prompts throughout the day that asks them to share a photo of what they’re doing in that moment. The app then gives them a 2-minute time limit to post their update. Unlike other social media platforms, BeReal places their focus on authenticity and sharing “real life”. BeReal describes their app as such: “No filters. No followers. Just friends, sharing with each other. On BeReal, you discover your friends’ real lives and get closer to them.”

How is BeReal impacting the social media landscape?

This approach has gained a lot of traction with consumers, with the app reporting up to 10 million daily users in August. Competitors have taken notice of the growing power of BeReal and have been quick to incorporate the main gimmick into their own apps. Instagram was the first to hop onto it with the live testing of their ‘candid’ feature, which encourages users to use the new dual camera option and to join the “IG Candid Challenge” which sends users a notification at different times of the day to capture and share a photo in 2 minutes. Snapchat joined the trend recently with their ‘dual’ recording option, which takes the concept in a more creative direction with different dual posting formats, like horizontal and picture-in-picture.

How can you Incorporate BeReal into Your Marketing Strategy?

Even though BeReal does not allow formal marketing yet, brands have found creative ways to connect with their consumers and promote their brand to a wider audience. Chipotle for example, uses BeReal to share promo codes for customers alongside pictures of employee lunches. Beauty brands like Glow Recipe also share checkout codes that lead to things like free samples and free full-size products. Other brands are utilizing this app to give customers a peek into behind the scenes content and the typical day of an employee. In order to make the most of BeReal, it is important to connect with your audience in a personal and more authentic way than you might do on more sophisticated platforms like Instagram or Facebook. By leaning into BeReal’s concept of originality, you can form deeper relationships with your consumers.
